Issue Brief -- The Case for Prevention
Researchers believe that hundreds of thousands of lives could be saved annually if people stopped smoking, lost weight, exercised and consumed a healthy diet. Yet such measures represent only a few of the prevention techniques being applied at the local, state and federal levels.
This four-page issue brief, funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, offers an overview of the three main types of prevention efforts, and presents examples of successful prevention programs. Also included: a discussion of why the Congressional Budget Office declines to attribute any savings to prevention programs in evaluating health reform proposals.
